Fast food is part of our modern lifestyle. Available everywhere and conveniently accessible via drive-throughs, there is no simpler way to get food in a hurry. In essence, you buy a pre-packaged, one-course meal. There is plenty of choice, from small snack portions for children to “extra value” sizes for the big appetite. French fries are the standard side dish. And all can be washed down with a cold drink.
Hamburgers, of course, are at the center of the fast food culture. They also come in a variety of styles and sizes. Usually, they are topped with cheese, onions, perhaps a slice of tomato, and lots of mayonnaise and ketchup. Fish Sandwiches are a “lighter” choice. Unfortunately, they are not made with real fresh fish filets, but formed, breaded, and deep-fried patties. Chicken Nuggets, popular with children (since they often come with a free toy), consist of formed and fried pieces of chicken meat. Their fat content tops almost all other items on the menu. A Grilled Chicken Sandwich is made with skinless white meat, which makes it a little lighter in fat and calories. Many fast food chains now offer salads, such as a Grilled Chicken Salad. You can get a relatively healthy meal out of these, especially when you take off the bacon, cheese, and croutons, and opt for a low fat dressing.
Side dishes, such as French Fries and Onion Rings are fried and seasoned with salt. A more healthful option is a Baked Potato. You can ask for ketchup or a low fat salad dressing to replace butter, sour cream, and cheese toppings.
Ice cream-based desserts, especially Sundaes and Milkshakes, contain a great deal of fat from cream. If you want to avoid that, your best bet is Low Fat Frozen Yogurt.
