Addicted to Sodas?
It’s been one year since I took my last sip of Diet Coke®. I gave it up not because I thought it was the devil, but because I was simply drinking too much of the artificially sweetened stuff. I pretty much went cold turkey. But then I realized what I missed most was the psychological lift and the happiness that Diet Coke® had brought to my life.

Coconut Oil – A Secret Weight Loss Weapon?
Not sure if birds or bees do it, but it seems celebrities, chefs, and even some health professionals do it more and more these days – they eat, or at least recommend, coconut oil. I don’t personally consume coconut oil – not because of any thoughts I have about it one way or another, but because I’ve never tasted it or been exposed to it. Many seem to care because Mrs. Obama is not simply an American woman. She’s the face of “Let’s Move!” – a comprehensive anti-obesity initiative launched in February, 2010.

What to Expect From Calories on the Menu
It’s no surprise that given our hectic schedules and “on-the-go” lifestyles, eating out has become a popular pastime. We currently spend about half of our food dollars – more than ever before – on foods and beverages from restaurants, retail stores, recreational places and schools. Although eating out is certainly not something we should have guilt over, studies do suggest that the more we do it, the more calories we’re likely to consume. And, of course, more calories can contribute to unhealthy weight gain and other negative health effects.

Keep the Muscle, Hold the Fat
I’ve always been a fitness buff, not an extreme one, but I have consistently done basic weight training, walking and just a bit of running over the years. I also always loved being active and playing sports with my sons. As we get older, our muscle mass naturally diminishes while our fat mass tends to increase. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent these unwelcome developments. Smart exercise is one of them.
